The first full week of December has been stunning in its
temperature range east of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Take, say,
Edmonton, Alberta. Here, last Thursday and Friday were warmer than
usual by 25 degrees, highest reading being 50 degrees. The dip in
temperature last weekend was a sharp one, one that culminated in a
Tuesday morning low of 27 degrees below zero at the main Edmonton
airport. The swing in temperature was no less dramatic at Fort Saint
John, BC, were the high of 44 degrees last Thursday set a new daily
maximum for the date. Yet, as of Tuesday morning, the 24-hour
temperature range was from 22 to 12 degrees below zero. Average daily
temperatures were warmer than usual by 32 (Thursday) and colder than
usual by 26 degrees (Monday).
Early Tuesday, ice-cold gales were still whipping the island of
Newfoundland, but the worst of a severe wintry storm had come and
gone. At the provincial capital, Saint John's, winds Monday gusted 70
mph with wind chill registering below zero. Sustained winds were at
least as strong at Cape Bonavista, eastern Newfoundland.
Deep arctic cold does not await the solstice over the benighted
north of Russia. The first week of December has seen the pooling of
an intensely cold layer into the basin of the middle Lena River,
which is well within the Siberian "pole of cold". Coldest of these
seven days, each of which saw -60 degrees or lower somewhere, was
Tuesday: Churapcha set a morning low of 68 degrees below zero, then
barely budged to a high of 66 below zero. Average highs and lows for
December are 33 and 43 degrees below zero, respectively.
Thunderstorms, likely in a series rolling over the same ground
like a train, poured 10.1 inches of rain upon Villa Dolores,
Argentina, early Tuesday morning. The mean monthly rainfall of 3.5
inches pales in light of this outburst. Meanwhile, further northeast
in Florianopolis, Brazil, more than 2.4 inches of rain fell during
a 6 hour period in the late morning. This accounts for more than half
the normal rainfall for the month of December. This, in addition to
the nearly 0.6 inches that fell Monday, almost makes this month a
normal month for rainfall alone.
Temperatures across much of the Northwest Territory Tuesday
morning dipped below zero degrees. THis cold air remains bottled up
in Canada as low temperatures around the region were 50 degrees below
zero in Isachsen, and temperatures Tuesday morning in Old Crow dipped
to 47 degrees below zero as the high only climbed to 40 degrees below
zero.
