Monday, relative tranquility settled over the northern island of
Hokkaido, Japan. Saturday night and Sunday, however, were anything
but tranquil. Eastern Hokkaido was hammered by a blizzard leaving
anywhere between 6 and 24 inches of snow driving by winds of 30 to 50
mph. The cities of Nemuro, Kushiro and Abashiri shared in this
blizzard. Farther west, the storm unloaded heavy, wet snow upon
Sapporo. Equivalent to 2.9 inches of water, the snow cover was 15
inches deep early Monday.
Monday dawned with the coldest weather of the season thus far
across the heart of Alberta, Canada. At Calgary, this wintry cold came
on the heels of record-challenging warmth of Friday. The low Monday
was -4 degrees, or 14 degrees below average. Friday's high of 54
degrees was 21 degrees above average. So, too, did Edmonton register
a week-ending seesaw. Friday was as warm as 50 degrees yet Monday
dawned with 13 degrees below zero, as observed at the main airport.
Yakutsk, the capital of Yakutiya, Russia, has lately had one of
its harsher fall cold waves of recent years. The average temperature
for the seven days ending Monday was about 20 degrees below average.
Temperatures have varied between 55 and 41 degrees below zero with
thick ice fog shrouding the city most of the time. This Siberian
republic is home to the Pole of Cold, which is the coldest part of
the inhabited world.
Northwestern Australia hosted some withering heat Monday.
Temperatures were above 110 degrees over the Pilbara inland and even
locally near the sea. Dampier topped out 112 degrees, and Mardie,
114. Roebourne reached at least 112 degrees and the notoriously-hot
Marble Bar, no less than 111.
Bajkit, Russia, saw some chilly temperatures through the day
Monday as the low dropped to -48 degrees, well below the normal low of
-27 degrees, and the high temperature only climbed to -45 as the city
was trapped in fog. Over the past several days, temperatures have
continued to cool as the fog has struggled to break at all.
Temperatures have averaged more than 35 degrees below zero for highs
over the past 3 days, much cooler than the -12 degrees that typically
occurs for highs.
