December 5, 2004 3:42 p.m.

A deep storm heir to the former typhoon, Nanmadol, slammed Japan
Saturday and Saturday. Much of the archipelago weathered heavy rains,
although the high forward speed of the storm capped rainfall. At
Oshima on southernmost Honshu, rainfall was 9.0 inches within 24
hours. High winds lashed greater Tokyo. Before daybreak Sunday, high
winds broke through from the southwest, boosting temperature 20
degrees within 50 minutes. Those winds ultimately peaked at 75 mph
along the bay in Tokyo. Incidentally, the high of 77 degrees was 22
degrees above average for the date. Inland, winds to 84 mph were
clocked at the nearby town of Iruma. As if all the high winds and
heavy rains were not enough, the storm tapped enough cold air from the
north to unleash a blizzard over the island of Hokkaido. At Sapporo,
heavy, wet snow held the water equivalent of 2.5 inches.

Wintry cold has retaken the western plains of Canada. Friday,
Calgary, Alberta, narrowly missed tying the record high of 55 degrees;
54 was the high. Sunday, things were much different: temperatures held
in single digits beneath gray, snowy skies. The story was much the
same in the city of Edmonton. Farther north, Fort Saint John, BC,
registered back-to-back highs of 44 degrees Thursday and Friday, that
of Thursday being enough to set a new daily record. Saturday, the
day-time readings fell from the early-morning low of 7 degrees below
zero to 13 degrees below zero near mid day.

Early Sunday, a tropical cyclone is over the eastern Indian Ocean
south of Indonesia. Early Sunday morning, EST, this unnamed storm is
440 miles south of Jakarta, Jawa (Java), Indonesia. Drifting lazily
towards the southwest at less than 5 mph, winds about the cyclone are
holding near 40 mph. A mostly southwesterly path is forecast for this
storm for the next two to three days.

A late-spring storm unleashed winds of 45 to 65 across
Wellington, New Zealand. On the South Island, the same storm dumped
3.0 inches of cold rain upon Timaru. Average monthly rainfall here is
1.9 inches.

Weekend rainfall at Bergen, Norway, was 3.4 inches within 24
hours.

Vladivostok, situated on the shore of the Sea of Japan in far
southeastern Russia, has an average high temperature in early
December of 28 degrees. In the middle of Friday night, however, the
temperature soared to 45 degrees with rain. Within the next 24 hours,
the temperature plummeted to 16 degrees with heavy snow and blowing
snow.
