Saturday, Nanmadol is ending its life as a named tropical cyclone,
but not before having made a destructive mark along its path. The
center of the former typhoon was moving rapidly northeastward near
southern Japan on Saturday afternoon, EST. Within the next two days,
the extra-tropical storm, heir to Nanmadol, will race across Japan
thence onto the open North Pacific Ocean.

As of early Saturday, local time, rainfall from Nanmadol was 9.6
inches at T'aitung, southern Taiwan. In southwestern Japan, where
heavy rains spread well ahead of the storm, rainfall was 5.4 inches
at Shiono Misaki, on Honshu; 4.0 inches at Kagoshima and 3.3
inches at Nagasaki, both on Kyushu; and 4.1 inches at Muruoto Misaki,
on Shikoku.

During Saturday, Tropical Cyclone Agni dissipated off Somalia,
the Horn of Africa. Soon after taking shape over the Indian Ocean
unusually near the Equator early in the week, this was a moderately
strong cyclone with winds of a category-one hurricane.

The eastern Indian Ocean has a new and growing tropical cyclone.
Saturday afternoon, EST, this unnamed storm is 395 miles
south-southeast of Jakarta, Jawa (Java), Indonesia. Spinning towards
the southwest at 10 mph, the cyclone holds highest sustained winds of
40 mph. It is forecast to head more, or less, towards the southwest
with further growth over the next two to three days.

Early Saturday, a blizzard is slamming the northwestern shores of
Hudson's Bay. In Nunavut, visibility was nil at Rankin Inlet, where
winds gusting 50 to 55 mph whipped up old and new snow. Wind chill
hovered near 30 degrees below zero.

Thursday and Friday, northwestern Argentina and western Paraguay
sweltered in 100-degree heat. Santiago del Estero, Argentina, topped
out 108 degrees on Thursday. Friday afternoon, having reached 106
degrees, Santiago del Estero was hit with a blast of wind from the
south that, while bringing welcome cooling, also whipped clouds of
dust. In Paraguay, the high Friday was 107 degrees at Prats-Gil.

Vladivostok, situated on the shore of the Sea of Japan in far
southeastern Russia, has an average high temperature in early
December of 28 degrees. In the middle of Friday night, however, the
temperature soared to 45 degrees with rain. Within the next 24 hours,
the temperature plummeted to 16 degrees with heavy snow and blowing
snow.
