Having already battered the northern Philippines, Nanmadol is set
to cross Taiwan, albeit in a much weakened state. In fact, Nanmadol is
no longer a typhoon as of late Friday afternoon, EST; it is a tropical
storm. Tropical Storm Nanmadol is near Taiwan's southwestern coast or
about 245 miles south-southwest of Taipei. The storm has accelerated
towards the north-northeast and is now moving at 24 mph with highest
sustained winds near 65 mph. Nanmadol will probably be back over open
waters by Saturday morning having crossed Taiwan. Thereafter, the
cyclone is forecast to moving rapidly northeastward crossing the
Ryukyu Islands and skirting mainland Japan to the south while
weakening further later in the weekend.
As of Friday afternoon, EST, rainfall from Nanmadol has been 8.8
inches at T'aitung, southern Taiwan.
Tropical Cyclone Agni is weakening off the Horn of Africa. Late
Friday afternoon, EST, Agni is centered roughly 280 miles south of
Cape Gwardafuy, Somalia. Having top sustained winds of about 35 mph,
the cyclone is drifting towards the west-southwest at 9 mph. Agni is
forecast to move west-southwestward as it nears the coast of Somalia
while weakening further through Saturday.
Chinook warming has brought record and near-record highs to
the lee of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Thursday, the high of 44
degrees at Fort Saint John, BC, was good for a new high mark. In
Alberta, where the record book shows daily highs of 55 degrees for the
date at both Calgary and Edmonton, Friday saw readings of 54 and 50
degrees in the respective cities.
A wild coastal storm lashed Atlantic Canada with high winds,
driving rains and sharp blast of cold. This was well displayed on
Saint Paul Island off northeastern Nova Scotia, where whole gales
raged Thursday to early Friday. As the temperature slipped below
freezing, the highest winds -- nearly 80 mph -- were clocked late
Thursday.
Churchill, in the far northeast of Manitoba, weathered a bitter
arctic blast early Friday. The day began with 45-mph gusts,
a temperature of 20 degrees below zero and a wind chill of 50 below.
Tompo, Russia, ended a string of minus-60-degree days Thursday.
The foregoing 24 hours had a narrow range in temperature between 64
and 61 degrees below zero. Friday, the core of cold in this stretch
of northeastern Siberia shifted west to the far side of the Lena
River, where Nyurba set a low of 66 degrees below zero.
Thursday and Friday, northwestern Argentina and western Paraguay
sweltered in 100-degree heat. Santiago del Estero, Argentina, topped
out 108 degrees on Thursday. Friday, midafternoon readings were 106
and 104 degrees, respectively, at Santiago del Estero and Prats-Gil,
Paraguay.
A rainy, three-day stretch in eastern Brasil has left Caravelas
with 7.2 inches of rain as of Friday morning.
Average rainfall during December is about 1.0 inch at Chillan,
Chile. In the 48 hours ended Friday morning, however, rainfall was at
least 1.1 inches, so the monthly mean was reached by the third day of
the month.
Turkey's northeastern highlands have been unusually cold on more
days than not lately. Friday, for example, saw a morning low of -10
degrees and an afternoon high of 15 at Erzurum whereas daily averages
