Tropical Cyclone Arola has weakened over the South Indian Ocean.
Late Thursday afternoon, EST, Arola was located 350 miles south of
Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory. Highest sustained winds
were near 50 mph; Arola was drifting at 6 mph towards the southwest.
Arola is forecast to keep to open waters for at least the next two to
three days.

Rainfall Wednesday into Wednesday night was 4.5 inches in just
12 hours, and 5.8 inches in 24 hours, at Hamhung, North Korea.

Rains at midweek were heavy over southwestern Japan. On the
island of Kyushu, Miyazaki picked up 6.7 inches of rain.

Wednesday night, high winds raked Ellsworth Land, West
Antarctica. Automated weather equipment showed sustained winds of at
least 97 mph at the Ski-Hi station. At the time, temperatures hovered
in single digits.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms have splashed many islands of the
eastern Caribbean Sea this week. At the Prinses Juliana airport on
Sint Maarten, for example, rainfall was 6.0 inches from Monday to
early Thursday morning.

A northbound cold front instigated soaking showers and
thunderstorms over middle South America this midweek. One particularly
rainy spot was Campo Grande in southern central Brazil. Here, rainfall
was 4.7 inches, chiefly within 24 hours from Wednesday afternoon to
Thursday afternoon.
