Tropical Cyclone Arola continues to ply the waters of the South
Torrential rains swamped portions of Costa Rica early this week.
Tuesday, soaking showers and thunderstorms broke out over eastern

Indian Ocean. Late Tuesday afternoon, EST, Arola is centered about 305
miles southeast of Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory, where
it holds highest sustained winds of 75 mph. The cyclone is heading
westward at 8 mph. A general path towards the west-southwest over open
seas is forecast to be cut by Arola during the next 48 hours. Some
weakening is also anticipated.
Along the Caribbean coast, Puerto Limon was especially hit hard. Here,
rainfall reached 12.9 inches within 66 hours at midafternoon Tuesday.
November is normally rainy with a mean rainfall of 15.6 inches, but
these rains were excessive for their duration.

This was the first time since late February that the mercury rose
above -40 Fahrenheit. It was only the second day since October 14
that was above normal. Since October 14, temperatures have been
5 degrees below average - quite cold for the middle of spring, even
for Vostok's standards.
