Saturday, Typhoon Ma-on has roared through southeastern Japan
unleashing flooding rains and destructive winds along the way. At the
time of landfall near the Tokyo Bay, Ma-on held highest sustained
winds of about 100 mph and was racing towards the northeast at almost
40 mph. As it tracked near Tokyo, winds gusting between 80 and 90 mph
pounded the city waterfront; rainfall reached 11.1 inches before
ending late in the day. Elsewhere, rainfall was 16.1 inches southwest
of Tokyo at Omaezaki. Sweeping away to the northeast, Ma-on was set
to become a strong mid-latitude storm.
Having left eastern Japan, Ma-on is now racing out to sea. Late
Saturday morning, EDT, Typhoon Ma-on is about 240 miles northeast of
Tokyo. Scooting towards the northeast at almost 45 mph, the storm has
highest sustained winds near 85 mph. Ma-on will become an extra-
tropical storm over the North Pacific Ocean within the next day.
Severe wind and dust storms have swept the deserts of southern
Asia since Wednesday. The area hit hardest straddles the borders of
Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran. Take Nok Kundi, Pakistan, for
instance. Sustained northwesterly winds have been above 50 mph much
of the time since Thursday with blowing dust and sand making for
visibility measured by mere yards. Thick dust lofted by the winds has
sifted down stream to the Arabian Sea and the Indus Plain at the heart
of Pakistan.
The weather has heated up across much of northern Australia.
Friday, for example, saw a top temperature of 109 degrees in Dampier,
Western Australia; Saturday was as hot at Port Hedland. On the other
side of the nation in Queensland, the coastal city of Brisbane Friday
reached 97 degrees versus an an average high of 78. Inland, Longreach
and Emerald each were about 15 degrees above average in setting highs
of 103 degrees.
Thursday and Friday were unusually hot along Mozambique's central
coasts. In Quelimane, the high each day was 105 degrees whereas
October's mean daily high is 90. Beira, meantime, set respective highs
of 101 and 104 degrees with these readings being about 20 degrees
above average.
In southern Bolivia, Villamontes reached at least 105 degrees on
Thursday and spiked to 106 on Friday. An average day in early October
here would have a high in the lower 90s, so the weather has been
exceptionally hot.
