Ma-on holds the distinction of super typhoon status. Late Friday
afternoon, EDT, the eye of Super Typhoon Ma-on is over the northern
Philippine Sea 465 miles southwest of Tokyo, Japan. The dangerous
storm is packing highest sustained winds of 155 mph as it sweeps
towards the north-northeast at 24 mph. Ma-on is set to make landfall
within 12 to 18 hours in southern Honshu on, or east of, the Kii
Peninsula. It could be a devastating strike if Ma-on were not to
weaken meaningfully before landfall.
As of Friday evening, local time, gales and heavy rains far ahead
of Super Typhoon Ma-on were lashing some of the exposed headlands in
southwestern Japan.
Severe wind and dust storms have swept the deserts of southern
Asia since Wednesday. The area hit hardest straddles the borders of
Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran. Take Nok Kundi, Pakistan, for
instance. Sustained northwesterly winds have been above 50 mph much
of the time with blowing dust and sand making for visibility measured
by mere yards. Gales and blinding dust storms were observed in the
Sistan district of Iran at Zabol.
Friday, soaking rains that washed the northeast of the Indian
Subcontinent beginning Wednesday wound down. In their wake, rainfall
was at least 15.7 inches within 48 hours over Rangpur, India. In
nearby India, rainfall was about 10 inches at Guwahati.
Snow has begun to whiten the northernmost reaches of Europe.
Teriberka, on the northern Kola Peninsula, Russia, had 4 inches of
snow on the ground as of Friday morning.
Thursday, heavy rains pelted the south Atlantic island of Gough,
south of Tristan da Cunha. Rainfall was 4.4 inches.
Thursday, wind chill to at least 120 degrees below zero was
registered at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station. Winds above 25
mph teamed with temperatures below -70 degrees to make for these
stunning readings.
Thursday, a high of 76 degrees, or 26 degrees above average, was
set at Moosonee, northern Ontario. As much above average for the day
was Churchill, Manitoba, where the high was 64 degrees.
The weather has heated up across much of northern Australia.
Friday, for example, saw a top temperature of 109 degrees in Dampier,
Western Australia. On the other side of the nation in Queensland, the
coastal city of Brisbane reached 97 degrees versus an an average high
of 78. Inland, Longreach and Emerald each were about 15 degrees above
average in setting highs of 103 degrees.
Thursday and Friday were unusually hot along Mozambique's central
coasts. In Quelimane, the high each day was 105 degrees whereas
October's mean daily high is 90. Beira, meantime, set respective highs
of 101 and 104 degrees with these readings being about 20 degrees
above average.
In southern Bolivia, Villamontes reached at least 105 degrees on
Thursday and spiked to 106 on Friday. An average day in early October
here would have a high in the lower 90s, so the weather has been
exceptionally hot.
