A weak, unnamed tropical cyclone is over the northern Arabian Sea.
At midday Saturday, EDT, this storm was centered about 115 miles
south-southeast of Karachi, Pakistan, moving toward the northeast at
11 mph. Top sustained winds were near 40 mph On the current track, it
will make landfall near the border of India and Pakistan on Saturday
night, EDT.

Things are unsettled and chaotic over the northeastern Indian
Ocean, too; specifically, the Bay of Bengal east of southern India.
This, too, could become a tropical cyclone during the next day or
two.

Spring can seem meaningless when it comes to the weather in
Antarctica. Thursday and Friday, temperatures 60 and more degrees
below zero were registered continuously at the South Pole. Given
winds of 20 to 30 mph, wind chill readings were 100 to 110 degrees
below zero most of the time. An automated weather station at the Sky
Hi station in Ellsworth Land, West Antarctica, winds above hurricane
strength were clocked much of Thursday and Friday; temperatures
ranged from 15 to 25 degrees below zero.

Early Friday afternoon, the temperature soared to 117 degrees at
Yanbu'al Bahr, Saudi Arabia, thereby making for three-straight days of
115-degree heat.

Friday, a coastal storm whipped up winds of 35-45 mph amidst
steady soaking rains at Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Total
rainfall was nearly 2 inches. The normal rainfall for October is 2.8
inches.

Mid- and late-week were excessively rainy in parts of the
Philippines. In southern Luzon, rainfall was 7.8 inches within 42
hours to early Saturday morning, local time, at Daet. Downpours also
left 6.4 inches within 60 hours ended Friday evening at Catarman,
northern Samar Island.

Torrential rain drenched parts of Vietnam on Saturday. Within 24
hours, nearly 9 inches swamped Phu Bai while over 3 inches fell at Da
Nang and Vinh.

Unusually hot weather has gripped parts of the Middle East this
week. In Israel, the southern town of Elat set a high of 103 degrees
on Friday. Temperatures have peaked in the 90s in Tel Aviv and
Jerusalem for the past few days; this is nearly 10 degrees above
average. On Friday, the heat reached well to the north over the
Caucasus region, where Kutaisi, Georgia registered a high of 94
degrees, more than 15 degrees above average.
