Rananim is a growing tropical storm over the western Philippine
Sea. Late Monday afternoon, EDT, Tropical Storm Rananim holds top
sustained winds of 65 mph about a center which is 365 miles south of
Naha, Okinawa, Japan. The storm is moving northwestward at 9 mph.
Rananim is forecast to maintain its northwestward heading while
intensifying to typhoon-strength during the next 48 hours. The
southern Ryukyu Islands of Japan, especially those southwest of
Okinawa, are at greatest risk of being lashed by the cyclone's heavy
rains and strong winds.

Gusty winds and downpours swept across the Windward and Leeward
Islands Monday as a strong tropical wave grew into a tropical
depression over the region. At the Grantley Adams airport on
southeastern Barbados, wind gusts beyond 50 mph were clocked, and
rainfall was at least 1.25 inches. Southern Saint Lucia had wind gusts
to 45 mph at the Hewanorra airport near Vieux Fort at the island's
southern end.

August has been unusually warm in London, England, and throughout
much of the British Isles. In London, the first eight days of the
month saw temperatures reach the 80s whereas each day had an average
high of 71 degrees. The average temperature during these eight days
was more than 9 degrees above the climatological mean. Sunday night's
low was only 71 degrees, but rain caused the temperature to dip into
the 60s on occasion during the daytime on Monday.

Parts of Iceland basked in abnormal warmth on Monday. In the
north, Akureyri rose to 74 degrees while the southeastern town of Hofn
spiked to 73. The average daily high in August is in middle 50s at
both locations.

In parts of southern Africa, the temperatures have been
dropping below normal for the past several days. In Bloemfontein,
South Africa, temperatures dropped to 24 on Monday and 23 degrees on
Sunday, well below the normal low of 38 degrees for
this time of year. The temperature in Frankfort, South Africa,
dropped to 21 degrees, also well below average.

The warmth continues for for Germany for the month of August. In
Berlin, the normal high for the beginning of August is near 73
degrees, but for the first 8 days of the month, temperatures have
averaged more than 9 degrees above normal for the highs and close to
6 degrees above normal for average temperatures this month. The
normal precipitation by the 8th of the month is nearly 0.70 inches.
So far this month, only a trace has been reported.
