Tropical Storm Meranti continues to die off in the northern
Pacific as the final advisory for the storm was issued early Sunday
morning, EDT. The storm was 910 miles northwest of Midway Island. The
storm has sustained winds of 45 mph with gusts of over 55 mph and is
moving northward at 16 mph. The storm will continue to weaken and
also become extra-tropical over the next 12-24 hours with no land in
the storms path.
Tropical Depression 16W is over the pacific near the Philippines
as of early Sunday morning, EDT. The storm was centered 610
miles south-southeast of Okinawa, Japan, and moving to the
north-northeast at 7 mph. Winds were sustained at 35 mph with gusts
to 45 mph. The storm is expected to move towards Japan over the next
2-3 days on a mainly northerly course and approach typhoon status.
Mumbai, India, also known as Bombay, was soaked by 20.9 inches of
this week rain from Sunday morning to Saturday morning, local time.
These downpours exceeded the mean rainfall for all of August which is
17.3 inches. Flooding in India and Bangladesh this monsoon season has
resulted in thousands of deaths.
It's been excessively rainy lately on the island of Guam, too.
Rainfall Wednesday, Thursday and Friday was 9.7 inches, or about 70%
of the August average. In June, a record-breaking 38 inches of rain
fell here, so it's been quite a wet summer.
On Friday and Saturday, a mass of bitterly cold air swept
northward out of the heart of Antarctica and across the Antarctic
Peninsula and South Shetland Islands, located due south of the
southern tip of South America. Temperatures across the region dropped
from near freezing to near or below zero as sustained winds reached
near 60 mph. Heavy falling and blowing snow were common.
