May 24, 2004: Extremely Large Hail Near Meadville, MO
An extremely dangerous and intense supercell thunderstorm tracked east along
the U.S. Highway 36 corridor on Monday May 24, 2004. This storm produced
widespread wind damage, very large hail, and even tornadoes.
A hail stone which fell in the community of Meadville Missouri has been
measured at 6 inches in diameter, with a circumference of 16 1/2 inches. This stone
falls short of the
U.S. record for hail size,
http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories/s2008.htm
which was set in Aurora, Nebraska back in 2003. However, it appears to be the
largest hail stone documented to have fallen in Missouri, at least in a query
of storm data records kept since 1950. Since 1950, there have only been 3
other hail events of at least 5 inches in diameter in the state of Missouri.
