Tropical Storm Namtheun has crossed the shores of Shikoku and then
moved on to southwestern Honshu in southwestern Japan near Hiroshima.
Saturday afternoon, EDT, the center of the storm is over the
mountainous terrain west of Hiroshima and heading toward the northwest
at 12 mph. By Sunday morning, local time, the center of the storm is
expected to slip offshore into the Sea of Japan. Highest winds are
currently 50-55 mph, and with the center over land, some weakening is
expected over the next 12 hours. A brush with eastern Korea is
foreseen later Sunday and Monday, local time.

Rainfall stemming from Namtheun was 13.0 inches at Owase on the
Kii Peninsula of Honshu, Japan. On Shikoku, which bore the brunt of
the storm's landfall, Muruoto Misaki, a cape thrust south into the
Pacific, Namtheun unleashed winds to at least 90 mph along with
nearly 7 inches of rain.

Saturday, even as Tropical Storm Namtheun was quenching some of
southwestern Japan, much of East Asia wilted in a stubborn, steamy
heat wave. Japan was hottest in the north, with Akita hitting 98
degrees for a second-straight day. South Korea had 99 degrees at
Jinju, and 98 at Masan. Seoul topped out 94 degrees with apparent
temperatures above 100. The central city of Chongju observed apparent
temperatures to 115 degrees in setting a high of 98. Taipei, Taiwan,
Saturday was nearly 100 degrees for a second-straight afternoon.
Shanghai, China, added to its lengthy string days having sultry
100-degree apparent temperatures.

Cool waters of the eastern North Pacific Ocean have sapped the
strength of Darby, formerly a strong hurricane. Saturday afternoon,
EDT, highest sustained winds of Darby, now classified a depression,
are down to 30 mph. Located 980 miles east of Hilo, Hawai'i, Darby is
headed towards the west at 16 mph. This feature will probably affect
Hawaii's weather by later Monday and Tuesday.

Soaking rains splashed Big Trout Lake in northwestern Ontario,
Canada, Wednesday to Friday. Rainfall was more than 2.6 inches within
48 hours as of early Friday afternoon. These downpours amounted to
about 70% of July's mean rainfall (3.6 inches).

Friday and Saturday, rainfall was 3.5 inches at Okhotsk, Russia,
along the northern shore of the Sea of Okhotsk.

Friday, a high of 80 degrees was registered in far northern
Norway well beyond the Arctic Circle at Alta. An average July day
would reach 62 degrees here.

Downpours unloaded 6.2 inches of rain within two days ended
Saturday on the island of Phu Quoc, far-southern Vietnam.
