Namtheun is bearing down upon southwestern Japan, but it has lost
its typhoon status. Late Friday afternoon, EDT, the core of Tropical
Storm Namtheun is 175 miles south-southwest of Osaka, Japan. With
highest sustained winds of 70 mph, the storm is drifting towards the
west-northwest at 8 mph. Indications are for a landfall of Namtheun
over southwestern Japan later Saturday afternoon or Saturday night,
local time; beforehand, additional weakening seems likely.
Outer winds and downpours of Namtheun Friday found their way onto
southern shores of Japan. At Owase, rainfall was 5.6 inches. Shiono
Misaki, on the island of Shikoku, had near gales and 3.1 inches of
rainfall late in the day.
A steamy mid-summer heat wave has spread over East Asia north and
west of Namtheun. Friday, most of Japan sweltered in the 90s with
highs of nearly 100 degrees. Hot spots registering 98 degrees
included Matsuyama in the southwest, but also at Aikawa and Akita in
the northwest. Indeed, Sado, an island in the Sea of Japan, is the
site of Aikawa, which has a mean July high of 78 degrees.
Over the eastern North Pacific Ocean, Darby is now a fading
tropical storm. Late Friday afternoon, EDT, Darby's highest sustained
winds are down to 60 mph. Located 1560 miles west of Cabo San Lucas,
Mexico, and 1430 miles east of Hilo, Hawai'i, Darby is headed towards
the west at 15 mph. Further weakening along a mostly westerly path is
indicated for the next two days.
Rainfall of late has been unusually heavy in southern Finland.
Rainfall at Helsinki was 4.6 inches within 60 hours ended Friday. On
average, all of July has 2.7 inches of rain.
Ratnagiri, India, had three-day rainfall of 11.9 inches as of
Friday afternoon, local time.
Soaking rains splashed Big Trout Lake in northwestern Ontario,
Canada, Wednesday to Friday. Rainfall was more than 2.6 inches within
48 hours as of early Friday afternoon. These downpours amounted to
about 70% of July's mean rainfall (3.6 inches).
Friday, a high of 80 degrees was registered in far northern
Norway well beyond the Arctic Circle at Alta. An average July day
would reach 62 degrees here.
Downpours unloaded 5.1 inches of rain within 48 hours ended Friday
evening, local time, in far southern Vietnam on the island of Phu
Quoc.
