Rainfall Friday and Saturday was 16.1 inches at Qinzhao in the
far south of China. Far to the north, nearer the heart of the nation,
Zaoyang picked up 6.7 inches, mostly within six hours.
Rainfall of late has been heavy to excessive over northern and
northeastern India, Bangladesh and lowlands of Nepal. In Bangladesh,
where the rains have triggered serious flooding, Sylhet had four-day
rainfall of 15.8 inches as of Saturday. Rainfall for the week was more
than one foot at Bhairawa, Nepal; Dhankuta picked up 9.0 inches
Wednesday through Saturday.
Friday brought withering heat to much of the Balkan Peninsula,
but especially to Serbia. Beograd (Belgrade) registered 101 degrees,
as did Nis, but also Podgorica, Montenegro. Saturday, locus of the
worst of the heat shifted eastwards such that Ruse, Bulgaria, hit
105 degrees and the century mark was reached or exceeded in other
locations in Bulgaria as well as in Romania.
Sopping wet air bathed the city of Fujayrah, United Arab Emirates
from Friday through the weekend. With temperatures topping out in the
middle 90s, dew points hovering close to 90 degrees, and bright
sunshine, the weather felt as hot as 136 degrees. Under such
conditions, water in the air condenses on any surface with a
temperature below 90 degrees, making even a warm glass of water
"sweat".
The middle of July marks the hottest time of the year in Iraq,
when much the nation bakes with temperatures well over 100 degrees
and unrelenting sunshine. No current weather observations are
available, but climatological records show that mid-July has high
temperatures averaging near 111 degrees and average low temperatures
near 78 degrees. This is even hotter than the average at Palm
Springs, California, which tops out at 109, and nearly as hot as
Death Valley, where average highs top out at 116. While Death Valley
is essentially unpopulated, the Baghdad metropolitan area is home to
nearly four million people. United States troops in the area have
reported temperatures as high as 126 degrees, in the shade.
