Mindulle is now a tropical storm. As of late Thursday afternoon,
EDT, Tropical Storm Mindulle is centered over eastern Taiwan about 110
miles south of Taipei. With maximum sustained winds of 65 mph,
Mindulle is moving towards the north-northwest at 9 mph. Rains from
Mindulle are finally beginning to abate across the northern
Philippines, but not before leaving some staggering amounts. The storm
unloaded 41 inches of rain at Baguio, perched over the highlands of
western Luzon. Along the shores of northwestern Luzon, Laoag amassed
rainfall near 25 inches. Heavy rain will continue in Taiwan for
another 24-36 hours due to the slow motion of the storm. Though the
weakening of Mindulle means reduced devastation from strong winds,
Taiwan is not being spared from heavy rain and potentially significant
flooding. Already 4-8 inches of rain has been measured in the south
and rain amounts could be 12 to as much as 20 inches before the storm
moves away. After leaving Taiwan, Mindulle is expected to turn toward
the northeast and accelerate taking its nasty weather to South Korea
and southwestern Japan.

Tingting is now a tropical storm over the open western North
Pacific Ocean moving away from Japan's Volcano Islands. As of late
Thursday afternoon, EDT, Tropical Storm Tingting is centered about 500
miles northeast of Iwo Jima, one of the Volcanoes; it is heading
towards the east-northeast at 14 mph. Tingting holds highest sustained
winds of 65 mph. Tingting will continue to head away over the
wide-open North Pacific Ocean while weakening over the next several
days.

Wednesday's rainfall was a mere 0.01 of an inch at the
international airport on the island of Guam, but June's rains were
record-setting. The month ended with 37.99 inches of rain, thereby
smashing the June record of 14.61 inches from 1985. June's average
rainfall here is about 5.8 inches, so this month's rains were more
than six times the mean. A large part of this tally came on the 27th
and 28th as Tropical Storm/Typhoon Tingting passed nearby; rainfall on
these two days was about 21.5 inches. Three-inch dousings occurred on
the 16th and 21st.

This midweek, parts of southeastern Asia have sweltered with
oppressive heat and humidity. In Hanoi, the Vietnamese capital,
Thursday felt as hot as 128 degrees as indicated by the AccuWeather
RealFeel Temperature (tm). Temperatures as high as 99 degrees, dew
points in the lower and middle 80s, strong sunshine and hardly any
cooling wind were the primary factors that drove this index to its
lofty peak. The story was much the same along China's southeastern
shores. The top RealFeel Temperature in Macau was also 128 degrees,
and Hong Kong registered a top reading of 121 degrees in this
category.

Moderately heavy snows whitened parts of southern South America
Wednesday to Thursday even away from the higher Andes. In southern
Chile, snow lay 7 inches deep Thursday morning at Balmaceda while
Coihaique was beneath a six-inch-deep mantle. Across the border in
southern Argentina, a snow depth of 2 inches was measured in Perito
Moreno.
