Conson has lost typhoon status on its approach to southwestern
Japan. Late Thursday afternoon, EDT, Tropical Storm Conson holds
highest sustained winds of 70 mph about a center which is 15 miles
east of Tanega Shima, a small Japanese island south of Kyushu, and 610
miles southwest of Tokyo. The storm is moving northeastward at 21 mph.
Conson will continue to weaken on a northeastward heading that will
take it over Japan, including the big island, Honshu, during the next
24-36 hours. The threat of damaging winds will quickly fade upon
landfall in eastern Shikoku or southern Honshu's Kii Peninsula, but
the risk of flooding rains will remain as the cyclone moves further
inland.

Rains linked to Conson were very heavy throughout Japan's Ryukyu
Islands. As of Thursday night, local time, rainfall was 12.1 inches on
Ishigaki Shima and 11.9 inches at Naha, Okinawa. Also pelted by
downpours were Naze, Amami O Shima, where 8.0 inches of rain fell and
Miyako Jima where 7.1 inches of rain were collected.

Meantime, an un-named tropical storm, having already crossed the
Philippine Archipelago, is plying the waters of the South China Sea.
This storm holds top sustained winds slightly above 50 mph as of late
Thursday afternoon, EDT. Centered 285 miles southwest of Manila,
Philippines, the cyclone is moving toward the west-northwest at 8 mph.
Forecasts call for the storm to strengthen on a west-northwestward,
open-water heading for the next two days. Thereafter, it may threaten
Vietnam or southeastern China.

In its passage over the central Philippines, the aforementioned
tropical storm dropped heavy rain. On the island of Panay, rainfall
was 4.6 inches at Iloilo while Romblon, Tablas Island, gathered about
3.1 inches of rain.

Thursday, 90-degree heat burned parts of western Europe again. In
northern Italy, Milano spiked to 96 degrees. Nearly as hot were
Piacenza and Verona where highs were 95 and 94 degrees, respectively.
Average June highs in these three cities are near 80 degrees. Geneva,
Switzerland, soared far above its 71-degree mean high in reaching 91.
Before thundershowers brought cooling, Karlsruhe, Germany, surged to
92 degrees, or about 20 degrees above average. Topping the list of hot
spots in France was Lyon with a 92-degree reading, but Gourdon,
Montelimar and Clermont-Ferrand all registered 91.

Monsoonal rains have hit parts of India's western shores hard
this week. In Goa, rainfall was 11.2 inches within about 3.5 days as
of early Friday morning, local time. This represents about one-third
of June's mean rainfall here.
