Typhoon Conson is making its way towards the East China Sea having
brushed Taiwan to the east Tuesday and Wednesday. Late Wednesday
afternoon, EDT, Conson is about 245 miles east of Taipei, Taiwan, and
within 170 miles to the west-southwest of Naha, Okinawa, Japan. Moving
northeastwards at 22 mph, Conson has highest sustained winds of 110
mph. Conson will pound some of Japan's southern Ryukyu Islands as it
heads into the East China Sea on a northeastward bearing.

In striking the island of Lan Yu, off Taiwan, Conson made for
sustained winds of 60 mph Wednesday. Wednesday night, local time,
winds rose to between 45 and 50 steady mph on Ishigaki Jima, one of
Japan's Sakishima Islands; at the time, rainfall had been 7.2 inches.

Rainfall at Naha, Okinawa, Japan, was nearly 10 inches within 24
hours ended Wednesday evening, local time. The rain was linked
indirectly to Typhoon Conson.

A new tropical storm is weaving a path across the middle
Philippine Archipelago. Late Wednesday afternoon, EDT, this un-named
storm is centered over open seas between Panay Island and Palawan
Island. The storm is bearing towards the west-northwest at 10 mph with
highest sustained winds of 50 mph. The storm will find its way into
the South China Sea within 24 hours or so where it is forecast to
strengthen.

Much of western continental Europe basked in summery heat on
Wednesday. In France, 93 degrees was registered at Mont-de-Marsan
while Montelimar and Lyon both reached 92. Other hot spots in France
breaching the 90-degree mark were Strasbourg, Bordeaux, Gourdon and
Clermont-Ferrand. Germany recorded 93 and 92 degrees, respectively, at
Karlsruhe and Frankfurt with these marks 20 or more degrees above
average.

Strong winds battered portions of southern Chile's coastline
Wednesday. On Isla Guafo, sustained winds blew at 50-60 mph for more
than six hours as of midafternoon, local time.

Soaking monsoonal rains pelted portions of India's western shores
this midweek. At Goa, rainfall was about 8.6 inches within 66 hours as
of early Thursday morning, local time.
