Conson has gained typhoon status over the South China Sea. Late
Monday afternoon, EDT, Typhoon Conson is centered about 275 miles
north-northwest of Manila, Philippines. Holding top sustained winds of
75 mph, Conson is drifting towards the north at about 7 mph. Conson is
forecast to head towards the north-northeast with only minor changes
in strength during the next 24-48 hours. In doing so, the storm will
continue to brush northwestern Luzon Island, Philippines, through
Monday night, then would threaten Taiwan at midweek.

As Conson sprang to life late last week, it ushered in the start
of summer rains over northwestern Philippines including the city of
Manila. At Cubi Point, rainfall since Friday was about 14 inches, 9
of which fell within 24 hours ended Sunday morning, local time.

Monday's low of 100.3 degrees below zero was the first -100 of
the year thus far at the Amundsen-Scott station, located at the South
Pole, Antarctica. The last -100 happened on the 14th of September,
2003.

Focus for the world's hottest weather has shifted, at least for
now, to the head of the mideast gulf. Monday, temperatures neared 120
degrees on the plains of southwestern Iran, southeastern Iraq and
Kuwait. Kuwait City and Abadan, Iran, reached at least 118 degrees.

Seas off southwestern Mexico may play host to a tropical
depression within the next day.

Monday, summery warmth spread northward in western Europe to reach
England and Wales. Highs in the middle and upper 70s were set in many
areas, and there were even warmer sites. London's Heathrow airport
notched 82 degrees, thereby surpassing the day's average high by 15
degrees. Nearly as warm were Coltishall, Brize Norton and Lyneham;
these three towns in the southern half of England all reached 80
degrees on Monday. In France, Paris hit 80 for the first time this
year; the high was 82 degrees.

In northern Vietnam, downpours Sunday to Monday, local time, left
a rainfall of 5.0 inches within 24 hours at Nam Dinh.

Monsoonal rains have been heavy in parts of southwestern India
lately. In Mangalore, rainfall was 9.1 inches within a little more
than 60 hours as of Monday night, local time.
