A withering blast of heat burned Pakistan Friday afternoon. Highs
of 122 degrees (fully 50 degrees Celsius) were set at Sibi and
Jacobabad, and Nawabshah observed 120 degrees.
Thursday to early Friday, late-spring snows blanketed a small
stretch of eastern Siberian Russia. At Aldan, part of the vast Sakha
republic, snow holding 2.0 inches of water equivalent left snow at
least twelve inches deep as of Friday morning, local time. Snow is
truly the exception this late in the season: the average high is at
least 55 degrees, and only Tuesday, a high of 73 degrees was set.
Thursday, the southern Turan Lowland of Central Asia sweltered in
an early blast of desert heat. Highs were 100 and even 110 degrees in
a swathe taking in parts of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan,
and reaching southward into nearby Iran and Afghanistan. Uch Adzhi,
Turkmenistan, reached 111 degrees. Friday, a smaller part of this
area topped 100 degrees once again.
A potent tropical wave over the South China Sea seems to be
developing a well-defined, low-level circulation and could become a
tropical depression soon. Friday morning, EDT, this wave was about 280
miles west of Manila, Philippines, and it was drifting towards the
west-southwest at 6 mph.
Recent weather has been quite unsettled in Europe from the Alps to
Italy and the Balkan Peninsula. An observatory set more than 9,700
feet above sea level on Germany's highest mountain, Zugspitze, was hit
by three days of snow which had a liquid equivalent of 3.5 inches as
of Friday morning, local time. The snow depth increased by 14 inches
to 130 inches during this time. On the shores of the Adriatic Sea,
meantime, it was unusually heavy rain that was noteworthy. At Bari,
Italy, rainfall was 3.2 inches within 24 hours ended late Friday.
