A broad atmospheric trough has, of late, doused much of the
island of Hispaniola. Over the Dominican Republic, which makes up the
bulk of this Caribbean island, torrential rainfall has been the
result for the last day or two. Indeed, 24-hour rainfall over Santo
Domingo was 8.2 inches as of Monday morning. Barahona picked up 5.9
inches within the same span of time. In Puerto Rico, rainfall since
Saturday was 3.8 inches. And in Barbados, 4.3 inches of rain
splashed the Grantley Adams airport Sunday night into Monday.
Withering heat of late last week has bridged the start of the new
week in eastern Arabia. In the sear desert hinterland of Oman, Monday
made for three-straight days of 115-degree heat at Fahud. Saturday
and Sunday saw 117 degrees, and Monday's temperatures were in step to
reach or top this mark. At the Seeb airport serving the city of
Muscat, the temperature soared to 117 degrees at midday before a sea
breeze trimmed readings. But, with this shift in wind, sauna-like
humidity wafted in boosting late-day apparent temperatures above 120
degrees.
A fall rainstorm has washed the fertile Pampas of Argentina since
Saturday. Two-day rainfall as of early Monday was 4.6 inches at
Laboulaye and 4.4 inches at Rio Cuarto. Along the waterfront in
Buenos Aires, rainfall was 2.5 inches whipped by winds of 30-50 mph.
Soaking rains hit portions of southern Canada during the past
weekend and into Monday. Downpours were most widespread in
southeastern Ontario where rainfall was 3.9 inches at Wiarton. Other
rainy standouts here included: Peterborough with 2.6 inches of rain,
Muskoka with 2.5 inches, Trenton with 2.2 inches and Toronto with 2.0
inches. In southernmost Saskatchewan, meanwhile, Rockglen collected
2.6 inches of rain while both Assiniboia and Coronach picked up about
2.1 inches.
Unusually heavy late-springtime rains wet parts of northern
Algeria Sunday to Monday. The rainfall was heaviest over the Atlas
Mountains. At Djelfa, for example, almost 1.3 inches of rain fell
within 24 hours. May's average rainfall here is about 1.5 inches, so
nearly one month's worth of rain fell in about a day.
