Parts of the Philippines have been soaked with heavy rainfall
this weekend. A persistent flow of moisture from the southwest
unloaded rain on the northern part of Luzon, the large island of the
northern Philippines. Itbayat was especially hard hit; more than ten
inches of rain poured down in a thirty-hour period ending midday
Sunday, local time. At that time, heavy rain was still falling, and
another few inches seemed likely by nightfall. At Cubi Point,
rainfall during the same period was about 6.5 inches. Several other
locations were doused with rainfall of 2-4 inches. Most of the rain
was north of the capital city of Manila. Rainfall there was sporadic,
adding up to about a third of an inch.

By Sunday morning, tropical depression Omais dissipated over the
northern Philippine Sea. All that was left of the storm was a
tattered area of cloudiness which seemed to be getting absorbed into
another band of clouds associated with a cold front.

An area of disturbed weather developed over the Caribbean Sea late
last week and has persisted through the weekend. This area will be
watched closely, since it could spawn a tropical depression over the
next few days. Scattered showers and thunderstorms have doused some
areas, including the Dominican Republic. Much of the island nation
had more than an inch of rainfall Saturday, but one place, Santiago,
was well ahead of the others, with nearly 8 inches of rain falling in
just 6 hours ended early Sunday morning.

After a two-day break from heat, Bangkok, Thailand, had
temperatures in the 90s once again Sunday afternoon. On Friday and
Saturday, Thailand's capital had a steady light rain which held
temperatures in the low 80s both days. Typically, the temperature climbs
into the middle 90s each afternoon this time of year, and it has on
almost every other day this month.

Very hot weather continued to bake much of Pakistan on Sunday.
Two spots, Jacobabad and Pad Idan, had high temperatures of 120
degrees. For both places, this was actually a cool-down, since
Saturday had highs of 123 degrees in Jacobabad and 122 in Pad Idan.
The heat was accompanied by extreme dryness in both places. Relative
humidity was below 10 percent much of the time, and dipped as low as
2 percent at Jacobabad.
