Tropical Storm Nida is now racing toward the northeast and
becoming a non-tropical low east of Japan. Over the past week, Nida
developed and rapidly strengthened, reaching super-typhoon status for
a couple of days. The dangerous storm skirted the Philippines,
bringing heavy rainfall and damaging winds to a couple of smaller
islands, and then turned toward the north and northeast, missing
eastern Japan by just a couple of hundred miles. Friday morning, EDT,
Nida still had top sustained winds near 50 mph. Riding jet stream
winds, Nida's movement was toward the northeast at 50 mph.

Soaking rains extended outward from Nida to hit parts of Japan. On
Tanega Shima, a small island south of Kyushu, rainfall was 6.4 inches
Tuesday to early Friday. Further south, downpours amounted to 5.9
inches of rain at Naze, Amami O Shima. One of the Izu Islands, Hachijo
Jima, was soaked by 6.5 inches of rain. On the main island, Honshu,
rainfall was 4.7 inches at the southernmost point, Shiono Misaki.
Tokyo also received a good dousing from the northern fringe of Nida's
wrath. Rainfall there amounted to just over 4 inches. The capital city
also saw some wind as the storm went by. Winds were sustained at 25-30
mph for a while, with gusts close to 40 mph.

Omais, meanwhile, is a weak tropical storm over the northern
Philippine Sea. Late Friday afternoon, EDT, Omais is centered about
500 miles southwest of Iwo Jima, one of Japan's Volcano Islands,
where it holds highest sustained winds of 40 mph. The storm is moving
toward the north-northeast at nearly 20 mph. Omais is forecast to
change little in strength on a north-northeastward heading during the
next 48 hours. During this time, the storm will likely bring rainy,
windy weather to some of the Volcano and Bonin Islands.

The weather has grown to be rather unsettled in parts of the
Caribbean Sea and some eastern islands were pelted by downpours at
mid- and late-week. On Dominica, the Melville Hall airport collected
about 4.0 inches of rain within 24 hours Tuesday to Wednesday, then
another 2.5 inches of rain poured down within 30 hours Thursday to
Friday.

Brutal heat baked much of Pakistan again on Friday. Jacobabad
broiled with a high temperature of 123 degrees Friday afternoon. This
high was preceded by highs of 124 on Wednesday, and 121 on Thursday.
Sibi also cooked at 120 degrees Friday afternoon, after reaching 118
on Thursday. In between these brutal highs, the night-time low at Sibi
only managed to dip to around 100 degrees. Many other locations around
Pakistan had late-week high temperatures above 110 degrees.
