Nida is a weakening typhoon over the northwestern Philippine Sea.
Late Wednesday afternoon, EDT, Nida holds highest sustained winds near
100 mph about a center which is 235 miles southeast of Naha, Okinawa,
Japan. The storm is moving toward the east-northeast at 23 mph. Nida's
core is passing over Japan's tiny Daito Islands. During the next 24-48
hours, Nida will accelerate toward the northeast, weaken and become an
extra-tropical storm. In doing so, however, the cyclone will brush
Japan's big island, Honshu, to the southeast, perhaps bringing strong
winds and heavy rain to Tokyo.

Typhoon Omais, meantime, is holding its own over the southern
Philippine Sea. Omais is wielding top sustained winds of 75 mph as of
late afternoon Wednesday, EDT. Drifting northwestward at only 6 mph,
the typhoon is centered 450 miles west-northwest of Yap, Federated
States of Micronesia, and more than 800 miles west of Guam. Little
change in strength and an open-water, northward heading are projected
for Omais through the end of the week.

A tropical cyclone from the Bay of Bengal landed in Myanmar
(Burma) on Wednesday. Late in the day, the weakening storm is inland
with its center about 50 miles east of Mandalay. With top sustained
winds down to 35 mph, the cyclone is moving east-northeastward at 21
mph. The storm will quickly dissipate during the next 24 hours, but
the threat of heavy, flooding rains will persist into Thursday.

Searing heat baked the plains of Pakistan again Wednesday. Topping
the list of fiery hot spots was Jacobabad where 124 degrees was
reached. Nawabshah was nearly as hot with a high of 121 degrees. Also
breaching the 120-degree mark were Pad Idan and Dera Ismail Khan.

Parts of Egypt heated to abnormal levels on Wednesday, too. In
the southeast, a high of 116 degrees was registered at Aswan versus
an average high near 101. Luxor was about 10 degrees hotter than the
daily mean high in reaching 113.

Chilly air continued to be over much of northern Canada, mainly
Nunavut and the Northwest Territory. Temperatures across the area on
Tuesday were very cold with average lows more than 30 degrees below
normal and highs nearly 20 degrees below normal. Temperatures at
Chesterfield, Nunavut, Canada were as low as -8 degrees, more than 30
degrees below their normal low, and 13 degrees for a high, nearly 20
degrees below their normal high of 35 degrees. Hall Beach, Nunavut,
was also -8 degrees for a low Tuesday, nearly 30 degrees below their
normal low of 18. The high reached 18, more than 10 degrees below
their normal high of 30.
