Super Typhoon Nida is now moving away from the northern
Philippines. As of Tuesday morning, EDT, Nida was centered at 18.0
north and 123.8 east or about 630 miles south-southwest of Okinawa in
the Ryuku Islands southwest of Japan. It did bring some heavy
rainfall over parts of northern Luzon in the northern Philippines in
the past 12-24 hours, but rainfall was not as heavy as in the central
Phillipines. The storm now has highest sustained winds of 125 mph and
top gusts of 150 mph. It is now moving northward at 8 mph. Over the
next 12-24 hours, the storm is expected to turn northeastward while
maintaining it's intensity. It should then continue northeast and
begin to accelerate. After about 36 hours, as it reaches cooler water
and begins to interact with westerlies farther north, Nida should
begin weakening. The storm is expected to move east of the Ryuku
Islands, though the outer fringes of the storm may have some impact
there later Wednesday into Thursday. The storm is eventually expected
to move toward southeast Japan Friday, in the vicinity of Tokyo. It
is too early to determine if Nida will indeed make landfall in
southeast Japan, however, by the time it moves that far north, it
should be considerably weaker and should be moving quickly.

Tropical storm Omais continues to churn across the western North
Pacific Ocean. As of Tuesday morning, EDT, it was centered about 80
miles west-southwest of the island of Yap. The storm is moving to
the west-northwest at 12 mph and has maximum sustained winds of 70 mph.
A general northwestward path is foreseen over the next day or so, then
a turn to the north is expected. Some strengthening is possible and
Omais could be upgraded to a typhoon within the next 36 to 48 hours.
Omais did bring just under 2 inches of rain and wind gusts to near 35
mph as it passed to the south of Yap early Tuesday. It will now head
over open waters for the next several days and is not expected to
affect any land areas through at least Friday.

A third tropical system, this a tropical cyclone is located in
the Bay of Bengal east of India. As of Tuesday morning, EDT, the
cyclone was located about 300 miles south of Calcutta, India and was
drifting to the southwest at 6 mph. It became a bit less organized
Monday night, but has regained some of its circulation Tuesday
morning. It now has sustained winds of 40 mph. This storm is
now in the process of turning back to the east or northeast and a
general east to northeast path appears most likely over the next day
or two. Steering winds are light though and this storm could meander
for a time, so the future path remains somewhat uncertain. So far
rainfall has been sporadic and mainly over the Bay of Bengal, but
there is still potential for flooding problems because of the slow
overall movement of the storm.

Monday, fiery heat burned a wide area of western Asia from
Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to western Siberia. In Turkmenistan and
astride the Afghanistan border, Charshanga withered under 108-degree
heat that was a full 20 degrees above average for middle May. Termiz,
Uzbekistan, another border town and less than 40 miles from Mazar-e
Sharif, Afghanistan, soared to 105 degrees. Highs in the middle and
upper 90s were registered throughout nearly all of central Kazakhstan
and into western Russia east of the Urals. In Chemal, Russia, the high
of 99 degrees was nearly 35 degrees above average. Ishim and Makushino
were among many other Russian sites reaching the upper 90s and some
30-40 degrees too hot for the time of the year.
