Super Typhoon Nida has been bringing very heavy rainfall to parts
of the Philippines the past 36-48 hours. As of late Monday afternoon,
EDT, Nida's eye is located about 225 miles northeast of Manila,
Philippines. The storm has highest sustained winds of 150 mph and top
gusts of 185 mph. It is now moving northward at 10 mph. Nida has
brought 5-10 inches of rain across much of the central Philippines,
with the heaviest amount being more than 11 inches at Virac. The
center of the storm passed over the small island of Catanduanes Sunday
night. Nida's core is expected to stay just east of northern Luzon,
though it will be close enough to cause very heavy rainfall across
much of northern Luzon. The storm is expected to turn toward the
northeast over the next couple of days and threaten the Ryukyu
Islands and mainland Japan at mid and late week.

The tropical storm 05W, has been downgraded to a tropical
depression. As of Monday morning, EDT, the depression was about 180
miles east of Ho Chi Minh City and was moving to the northeast at 6
mph. It is not expected to regain enough strength to become a tropical
storm and should not pose a serious threat to any land areas.

Another tropical storm is strengthening over the western North
Pacific Ocean. Late Monday afternoon, EDT, this un-named storm is
centered about 75 miles to the south of Yap. The storm is moving to
the northwest at 7 mph and has maximum sustained winds of 70 mph. A
northwestward path is foreseen over the next few days. On this course,
the cyclone's center will cross Yap within 10-20 hours, perhaps as a
typhoon. Once it moves away from Yap, it is not expected to directly
affect any land areas for a few days, but further intensification is
possible.

Another tropical system, located in the Bay of Bengal, has been
upgraded to a tropical cyclone as of Monday morning, EDT. It was
located at 18.7 north and 88.7 east or about 220 miles south of
Calcutta, India. It is drifting to the northwest at 3 mph and a slow
north or northwest path is expected to continue. Because of the slow
movement of this storm, there is potential for very heavy rainfall
over the next several days along the northeast coast of India, the
north coast of Myanmar and the coast of Bangladesh. These areas are
very densely populated and so there is the possibility for some
serious flooding problems.

Monday, fiery heat burned a wide area of western Asia from
Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to western Siberia. In Turkmenistan and
astride the Afghanistan border, Charshanga withered under 108-degree
heat that was a full 20 degrees above average for middle May. Termiz,
Uzbekistan, another border town and less than 40 miles from Mazar-e
Sharif, Afghanistan, soared to 105 degrees. Highs in the middle and
upper 90s were registered throughout nearly all of central Kazakhstan
and into western Russia east of the Urals. In Chemal, Russia, the high
of 99 degrees was nearly 35 degrees above average. Ishim and Makushino
were among many other Russian sites reaching the upper 90s and some
30-40 degrees too hot for the time of the year.
