A late-spring snowstorm raged across portions of southern Canada
Tuesday into Wednesday. In Brandon, Manitoba a total of 10 inches of
snow fell. In addition strong winds whipped the snow about; rather
unusual for this late in the season. Visibility was reduced to near
zero at times in the heavy snow and blowing snow. The high
temperature in Brandon Wednesday was 34 degrees; the normal high for
May 12th being 63. The low over the fresh snow cover dropped to 16
early Thursday. Meanwhile, 7 inches of heavy, wet snow fell on Dryden,
Ontario Tuesday before precipitation changed to rain Wednesday. In
all, 3.1 inches of liquid precipitation was recorded in Dryden.
Sprague, Manitoba reported 3.9 inches of liquid precipitation with
this storm.
Heavy thunderstorms unleashed a barrage of downpours in Paraguay
Wednesday. Puerto Presidente Stroess had 3.46 inches in a little over
24 hours. Estanislao was doused with 5.12 inches. Foz De Iguacu, in
northeastern Argentina had 3.82 inches from the downpours.
Tropical Cyclone Juba was in the southern Indian Ocean late
Thursday evening EDT. The center of Juba was located near 14.4 south,
67.5 east or about 590 miles southwest of Diego Garcia. Maximum
sustained winds were 75 mph - equivalent to a minimal hurricane and
movement was to the south at 7 mph. A general southward path is
favored over the next few days. The storm should begin to weaken as it
encounters an increasing amount of shear late this week and this
weekend. Its path should remain over open water.
A tropical depression continued to organize in the southwestern
Pacific Ocean Thursday evening. This depression (04W), also known as
"Dindo" according to the Phillipine National Weather Service, was
centered near 8.4 north, 131.9 east or about 190 miles to the
west-northwest of Palau. It was also about 850 miles to the southeast
of Manila, Philippines. The depression had maximum sustained winds of
nearly 30 mph and was drifting sluggishly toward the west-northwest.
It remains in an area favorable for further intensification. A general
west-northwest path is expected and this will threaten the southern
and central Philippines with heavy rainfall the next few days.
A third tropical disturbance over the South China Sea was showing
signs of organization Thursday evening. This feature was over warm
water and has a good chance of developing into a depression over the
next 24-36 hours. Even if it does not develop, it will probably bring
heavy rainfall to Vietnam this weekend into early next week.
Yet a fourth area of convection is showing signs of organizing
into a tropical system in the southern Bay of Bengal east of India.
This area will have to be monitored closely over the next few days as
some computer models show it developing into a large tropical cyclone and
moving northward. This would threaten the northeast coast of India,
the coast of Bangladesh and the north coast of Myanmar; areas that
are very densely populated and prone to flooding.
