Tropical Cyclone 01A continued to spin over the Arabian Sea
Sunday. As of Sunday morning, EDT, the storm was centered about 260
miles to the south of Mumbai (Bombay), India. Maximum sustained winds
with the storm were about 40 mph, and movement was toward the
northwest at 6 mph. The cyclone had been stronger, but upper level
winds have blown the storm apart and weakened it. Forecasts call for
a continued track toward the northwest and possibly some
strengthening over the next couple of days. This track would keep the
storm over water and away from land through at least Tuesday.

A spring heat wave has broken out this first week of May across
Scandinavia, the Baltic Nations and northwest Russia. Since May 1st,
overall temperatures throughout much of this region have run 10
to 15 degrees higher than average. In Helsinki, Finland, the high
Wednesday was 73; the average high for this time of year being 52.
Thursday saw a high of 77 in Helsinki and the temperature spiked to 77
again Friday and 78on Saturday. St. Petersburg, Russia has had similar
heat with the high Wednesday of 78; 23 degrees warmer than average.
Thursday's high was 80 and Friday and Saturday were again in the upper
70s. At Riga, Latvia, high temperatures Wednesday through Saturday
ranged from 75 to 80 degrees, about 20 degrees above average.
Meanwhile, far to the south across Europe, Rome had a high of only 62
degrees on Saturday, 9 degrees below average.

Heavy rain pelted the Malay Peninsula south of Bangkok on Friday.
At Surat Thani, Thailand, rainfall was three and a half inches.

Some of the hottest weather in the world on Friday and Saturday
was found in Egypt. Here, the temperature reached 116 degrees in
Kharga on Friday; Aswan had a high of 113 degrees and Luxor reached
112. Cooled by Mediterranean breezes, northern reaches of the country
were much more moderate with highs of 92 in Cairo and only 80 in
Alexandria. Saturday afternoon, the temperature at Kharga soared to
119 degrees, making it the hottest reporting station in the world for
the day.
