A tropical cyclone continues to spin over the Arabian Sea west of
southern India. As of Saturday afternoon, EDT, this un-named cyclone is
centered 320 miles south of Mumbai (Bombay), India, where it holds
highest sustained winds just over 50 mph. The cyclone is moving
towards the northwest at about 8 mph. Forecasts call for a
general northwestward heading and perhaps some strengthening during
the next 2-3 days. On this course, the cyclone's core would stay over
the open Arabian Sea through at least Monday.

Heavy rains linked to the Arabian cyclone doused India's southern
state of Kerala Tuesday through Friday. Kozhikode was pelted by
downpours that amounted to 13 inches. Cochin, meanwhile, had total
rainfall of nearly 15 inches. Twenty-three fishermen were reported
missing in the storm.

A fierce and long-lived windstorm and blizzard belted a rather
large section of West Antarctica at mid- and late-week. Germany's
Neumayer base on the Ekstrom Ice Shelf withstood sustained winds of
45-70 mph for more than 48 hours as of Saturday morning as
temperatures slowly rose from minus-10 degrees to near plus-10. The
fierce winds whipped snow from the ground into blinding whiteouts
which cut the visibility to virtually nil. Westward at Halley, a
British outpost, 50-60 mph winds blew, more-or-less, for about 48
hours Wednesday to Thursday. At Casey, winds mounted to 75 mph on
Friday night. The frigid winds here, too, lifted snow into thick,
opaque clouds.

A spring heat wave has broken out this first week of May across
Scandinavia, the Baltic Nations and northwest Russia. Since May 1st,
overall temperatures throughout much of this region have run 10
to 15 degrees higher than average. In Helsinki, Finland, the high
Wednesday was 73; the average high for this time of year being 52.
Thursday saw a high of 77 in Helsinki and the temperature spiked to 77
again Friday and 78on Saturday. St. Petersburg, Russia has had similar
heat with the high Wednesday of 78; 23 degrees warmer than average.
Thursday's high was 80 and Friday and Saturday were again in the upper
70s. At Riga, Latvia, high temperatures Wednesday through Saturday
ranged from 75 to 80 degrees, about 20 degrees above average.
Meanwhile, far to the south across Europe, Rome had a high of only 62
degrees on Saturday, 9 degrees below average.

Heavy rain pelted the Malay Peninsula south of Bangkok on Friday.
At Surat Thani, Thailand, rainfall was three and a half inches.

Some of the hottest weather in the world on Friday and Saturday
was found in Egypt. Here, the temperature reached 116 degrees in
Kharga on Friday; Aswan had a high of 113 degrees and Luxor reached
112. Cooled by Mediterranean breezes, northern reaches of the country
were much more moderate with highs of 92 in Cairo and only 80 in
Alexandria. By Saturday afternoon, the temperature in Kharga was near
120 degrees.
