"MALE, May 6 (HNS) -- The rough weather prevailing in Maldives over the
last few days have resulted in various injuries to people and destruction
of property. Strong winds, heavy rain and rough seas have been the features
of the past days due to a low pressure trough in the southwest Bay of Bengal.

The owner of the dhoni, Sharp, Afeef Mohamed said that a rope lying in the
sea got intertwined with the turbines and that, before they could get a
grip of the situation, the rough waves carried the dhoni, shattering it
onto the tetrapods of the seawall. On Monday, a speedboat anchored off
Nellaidhoo island in Haa Dhaalu atoll, was also wrecked onto the
breakwater. On Wednesday, tidal waves swept the congested Kandholhudhoo
island in Raa atoll, resulting in various damages to more than 200 homes,
while people were left with minor injuries.

In Haa Alifu atoll, Vashafaru island reported tidal waves striking the
island on Tuesday and Wednesday but no damages were reported either to
property or the 800 people resident in the island. However, strong winds
resulted in some trees and coconut palms being uprooted. Tidal waves also
swept into Maavaidhoo island in Haa Dhaalu atoll and eroded a considerable
area of the beach. On Monday night, tidal waves swept four islands in
Addu, Maldives southernmost atoll, while trees and coconut palms fell,
injuring one person, and rendering damages to homes. Tidal waves left an
area of one kilometer flooded on the Link Road, the 12-km highway which
connects some islands in Addu, according to Hithadhoo's Island Chief Hassan
Latheef. Tidal waves had swept into an area of 70 feet into
Maradhoofeydhoo while in Maradhoo, some parts of the beach were eroded.
Feydhoo also was struck by tidal waves and now garbage lies dumped on some
areas. Tidal waves also destroyed a considerable area of the quay of the
harbor being developed in Kulhudhuffushi island in Haa Dhaalu atoll as a
regional port.

In Maradhoo island on Monday night, roofs of seven houses were thrown off.
Other islands in Addu also suffered damages to houses while trees and
coconut palms were uprooted. Farmers also have been hit hard by the rough
weather with their crops being destroyed. Plantations have suffered the
most damages."
