MADISON COUNTY TORNADO:
FULL STORY #1:
http://www.madison-news.com/2004/May/6/tornado.shtml
QUOTES:
"A weak tornado during Sunday evening's rainstorms left a wake of
destruction in Madison. During the violent storms, trees were alternatively
snapped in half, uprooted or blown over by the tornados winds.
"The damage is consistent with a weak tornado," said NOAA Warning
Coordination Meteorolo-gist David Manning during a Tuesday visit to Madison.
High winds ripped asphalt shingles, metal roofs and wood siding off
structures and sent them flying. In many cases the pieces landed several
hundred yards away. Several homes were moderately damaged.
"At the tornado's maximum, winds were between 70-100 m.p.h., said Manning.
"The tornado looked to be a few hundred yards wide," he added.
The apparent track of the tornado was from between Shelby and Wolftown,
northward past the town of Madison, nearly paralleling Route 29.
Significant damage reports were intermittent along the route.
"Seventeen roads were closed at one time Sunday night due to downed power
lines and trees," said VDOT Madison Transportation Operations Manager Jimmy
Clore. Allegheny Power estimated that 2900 residents were without power at
the height of the storm."

QUOTES:
"8News was first to break the news of weather damage in the western part of
Virginia. Now, weather officials confirm that it was a tornado that ripped
through Madison County. The worst of the damage was near Wolftown.
8News reporter Morgan Dean surveyed the damage in Madison County. Wind blew
the roof right off of a shed at Lazy Creek Farm on Sunday evening.
About a mile from McMullen's farm, we found three trees right next to each
other, all blown over by the twister. You could even see the start of a
path there where the winds toppled another tree across the street. We spoke
with one woman who heard the twister tear through her backyard."

"8News has confirmed Sunday night's severe storms spawned a tornado. It hit
in King and Queen County, just one-and-a-half miles east of the Courthouse
area.
The tornado, with winds at 73 to 112 miles per hour, destroyed a barn and
another nearby outbuilding around 10:30pm Sunday night. It also uprooted
several trees, moved a mobile home off its foundation, and narrowly missed
a home with a young couple inside."

QUOTES:
"A National Weather Service meteorologist who examined the Carlton house
estimated that the tornado generated winds of between 80 and 100 mph, the
fifth-strongest among six categories of such storms.
The wind destroyed a picture window in a front room and left shards
sticking like daggers in the opposite wall. "It took the roof off the
garage, cracked the walls and blew the doors off it," Carlton said. The
gusts shoved his Ford Bronco into his pickup truck and demolished a long,
farm-equipment shed in his yard, sowing the surrounding field with lumber
and debris.
"It blew stuff from the house a quarter-mile" and reduced huge shade trees
in his yard to toothpicks, Carlton said. "But at my neighbors' [house] 300
yards away, it never blew a limb out of a tree.""
