April was hot throughout Thailand. Already the hottest month on
average, April this year was hotter than average by more than four
degrees in Bangkok. In northern Thailand, there were site that
observed 100-degree heat on 23 out of 30 days. Even hotter was
Yangon, Myanmar (Burma). Here, 24 of 30 days set highs of at least
100 -- and as much as 107 -- degrees. May, the month that brings the
onset of cooling seasonal rains, began no less stifling: 105 degrees
was struck.

Vostok station, Antarctica, Saturday set a low of 99 degrees below
zero. It was the second such reading this week, and tied for the
year's coldest thus far. At Amundsen-Scott station, South Pole, the
low of -95 degrees was lowest since September 15th of last year.

Above-average warmth Friday bathed Germany. Leading the way was
Frankfurt with 79 summery degrees.

Recent days have been unseasonably warm in the big cities of
southeastern Canada. Greater Montreal, Quebec, was downright summery
Thursday and Friday with afternoon temperatures each day in the upper
70s and lower 80s. Thursday night to early Friday, readings only
dipped into the upper 50s and lower 60s. Near the end of April, an
average day here would have a low of 39 degrees and a high of 57. The
national capital, Ottawa, Ontario, reached 79 degrees Thursday and 80
degrees Friday, thereby besting the average highs by almost 20 degrees.
Thursday's high was 77 degrees in Toronto as measured at the Pearson
international airport. This mark was 19 degrees above the mean and
within 3 degrees of the day's record high. Friday's morning low, 57,
was also about 20 degrees above average. Friday climbed to 72 degrees
before clouds and showers brought cooling. Both days, the city's
waterfront on Lake Ontario was cooler by 10-20 degrees. Friday,
summery warmth bathed most of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, at least
away from still-cold waters. Kejimkujik, NS, reached 86 degrees, and
in NB, 85 degrees was hit at Fredericton and Chatham.

Far-western Canada Friday had summery warmth in its own right.
Port Alberni, on Vancouver Island, set a high of 83 degrees, or more
the 20 degrees above average. East of the Coast Ranges, highs were 86
degrees at Pemberton and Lytton. Far to the north, Whitehorse, Yukon,
lofted to 69 degrees, two degrees shy of the daily record high.

Atuona, in French Polynesia, collected 6.2 inches of rain
Thursday and Friday.

Unusually heavy springtime downpours pelted parts of Saint Lucia
this midweek. At the southern tip of the island, the Hewanorra airport
near Vieux Fort collected 3.3 inches of rain, mostly within 24 hours.
This roughly equalled the average rainfall for all of April here.
Saint Lucia is among the Windward Islands of the southeastern
Caribbean Sea.
