"CAPE GIRARDEAU CO., MO -- You know about the tornadoes that hit the
Southeast Missouri towns of Ellsinore and Patterson on Saturday night. But
here's something you may not know. On Thursday, the National Weather
Service announced that another tornado actually touched down that same
night in Cape Girardeau County. Forecasters say it was an F-2, with winds
that got up to 130 miles an hour. It carved a path of destruction about
five miles long, primarily between the towns of Crump and Tilsit. The
twister hit at 7:47 and hung around for ten minutes.
Griffith took Heartland News on a tour of the damage path along County Road
379. There, we saw hundreds of trees uprooted, bent in half, and twisted
every which way. Many strips of bark littered the ground, peeled clean off
the trees. "That's a sign there was rotation in the wind," Griffith
explained. "A straight line wind doesn't usually do that. And, if it had
been a straight-line wind, all the trees would've been lying in the same
direction. Here you can see, they're lying in all different directions."
Griffith says the National Weather Service takes all of those things into
account. "To determine how strong the wind was, they look at how whether
the trees were broken or twisted off; if the trees were broken off near the
top or near the ground; if any trees were uprooted; and if the bark was
stripped off."
