"An airplane en route to Long Island MacArthur Airport was struck by
lightning Tuesday night and three other planes were turned away from the
Ronkonkoma airport because of turbulent weather, a spokeswoman for
Southwest Airlines said yesterday.
The flight struck by lightning suffered mechanical problems and was
diverted to Albany, where it landed safely, said spokeswoman Christine
Turneabe-Connelly. The three other planes landed at Baltimore- Washington
International Airport, Connelly said.
Air traffic controllers decided to divert the three planes to Baltimore
because of wind shear conditions at the Long Island airport. At least one,
according to a passenger, attempted to land twice before being rerouted."
