[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Friday, Apr 16

April 16, 2004 6:06 p.m.

The yearly heat that precedes the rainy summer monsoon throughout
the Indian Subcontinent has set in hard this year. This week, daily
highs above 105 degrees have been the rule throughout northern and
eastern India along with the plains of Pakistan. Moreover, much of
this area topped 110 degrees on at least one day. Wednesday and
Thursday, Nawabshah, Pakistan, registered respective highs of 115 and
118 degrees. Friday, strong southwesterly winds off the head of the
Arabian Sea trimmed the heat, but the winds kicked up dust
storms from southeastern Pakistan into northwestern India.

Another swathe of unusual heat has spread over Thailand lately.
At Bangkok, respective highs beginning Wednesday were 102, 104 and
103 degrees. April is a hot month with daily mean highs near 95
degrees, but this stretch of heat has been significant.

Canada's island of Newfoundland, renowned for its late-to-end
winters, has had quite a thaw this week. Indeed, Saint John's has
lost its snow cover, which stood at about one foot deep on the first
of the month, and Thursday, the high was 65 degrees -- 24 degrees
above average. Soaking rains and above-average warmth have routed
snow from much of Newfoundland and most of the other Atlantic lands
in Canada.

Over three days ended Friday, rainfall was nearly 15 inches at
Nausori, Fiji.

Murcia, in southeastern Spain, picked up 3.4 inches of rain
Thursday night to Friday. Mean rainfall for the month of April is
only 1.3 inches.

Some harsh cold atop the ice sheet of East Antarctica Friday.
Lowest temperatures were at least 94 degrees below zero at both
Vostok and Dome "C".

Friday, Kuwait City notched its first 100-degree reading of the
year with the help of stiff southwesterly winds in advance of a cold
front. The high of 102 degrees was more than 10 degrees above average
for the middle of April.

Unusual springtime warmth was felt in an area of northeastern
China westward and southwestward from Bo Hai, an arm of the Yellow
Sea, on Friday. Highs in the 80s were widespread here, and there were
a few hotter spots. In Shanxi province, 91 degrees was reached at
Shijiazhuang, thereby surpassing the mean daily high by a full 20
degrees. Beijing was about 15 degrees above average in topping out at
84 degrees.
