April 15, 2004 6:31 p.m.

After lashing Japan's Volcano Islands, including Iwo Jima, as a
typhoon, Sudal has weakened and transformed to an extra-tropical
cyclone over the western North Pacific Ocean. As of late Thursday
afternoon, EDT, the storm is centered 400 miles east-northeast of Iwo
Jima. Now moving east-northeastward at more than 30 mph, Sudal's top
sustained winds are down to about 60 mph. The storm will continue to
weaken during the next few days with only open waters in its path.

Sudal's fury came mostly during a 12-hour span Thursday, local
time, on Iwo Jima. Whole gales and torrential rains lashed the island
during this time and stronger, damaging winds marked the close passing
of Sudal's center. Ahead of the storm, highest wind gusts were a
little above 70 mph. After a brief lull, winds reached almost 90 mph
as the storm began to move away.

An unusually strong springtime storm dropped heavy rain on parts
of northwestern Africa Wednesday to Thursday. In Morocco, rainfall was
1.9 inches in Casablanca whereas the mean rainfall for all of April
here is 1.5 inches. Tetouan collected 1.4 inches of rain. In northern
Algeria, Oran was doused by 1.3 inches of rain, or roughly the monthly
average. More noteworthy, however, was the soaking received in Adrar,
a town at the heart of Algeria's desert lands. Rainfall was 1.14
inches within 18 hours here equaling the average yearly rainfall.

An intense North Atlantic storm unfurled sustained winds in
excess of 60 mph late Thursday at Vestmannaeyjar, a fishing port on
volcanic Heimaey Island, Iceland.

South Asia continues to see plenty of hot weather as temperatures
climb to over 100 degrees in much of northern India, Pakistan, and
into Thailand. Thursday had temperatures in much of Thailand climb to
over 90 degrees and over 100 degrees in northern parts of the country.
Temperatures continue to average more than 10 degrees above normal for
much of the country as the wet season has yet to begin and the
sweltering heat continues.
