April 10, 2004 10:13 a.m.

Saturday, Typhoon Sudal picked up the monicker of "Super" while
strengthening further over the southern Philippine Sea. Early Saturday
morning, EDT, the eye of Sudal is about 300 miles north of Koror,
Palau, western Caroline Islands. Highest sustained winds are now
above 150 mph as the big storm churns towards the northwest at 9 mph.
This violent storm will spend its fury over open seas for at least the
next two days, during which it is forecast to head towards the
northwest.

For Yap, worst of Sudal happened near midday, Friday, local time,
in this cluster of western Caroline Islands. As the eye of Sudal
skirted the islands to the south, wind gusts to at least 112 mph were
clocked. Highest sustained winds were 60 to 70 mph for several hours
at the height of the storm.

Fearsome arctic winds raged Saturday for a second-straight day at
Malyye Karmakuly, Novaya Zemlya, Russia. For upwards of 12 hours,
winds were clocked steadily at about 70 mph. Most of this time, time,
temperatures held in the lower single digits.

Early Saturday night, local time, the temperature dipped 96
degrees below zero at the Russian outpost Vostok set high on the ice
cap of East Antarctica. The reading was their lowest of the season
thus far.

On the shores of East Antarctica, meantime, a windstorm was
lashing Australia's Casey base Friday night and Saturday, local time.
With temperatures in the lower 20s, sustained winds rose above
hurricane strength reaching at least 83 mph at about mid day,
Saturday. Winds blew steadily at 50 mph or more for a span of about 15
hours.

Unusually heavy spring rains pelted parts of southern Spain on
Friday. Hard against the Mediterranean Sea, the city of Almeria
collected 1.3 inches of rain a day, or somewhat more than would fall
here in an average April. El Rompedizo, near Malaga, picked up
2.8 inches of rain.
