Typhoon Sudal has drifted away from Yap and is now whirling
towards the open Philippine Sea. Late Friday afternoon, EDT, the eye
of Sudal is about 240 miles west-northwest of Yap in the western
Caroline Islands, and virtually the same distance to the
north-northeast of Koror, Palau. Highest sustained winds about the big
storm have increased to 145 mph as it spins towards the west-northwest
at 9 mph. A northwestward heading over open seas is forecast for at
least the next two to three days.
Worst of Sudal happened near midday, Friday, local time, at Yap,
Micronesia. As the eye of Sudal skirted the islands to the south,
wind gusts to at least 112 mph were clocked. Highest sustained winds
were 60 to 70 mph for several hours at the height of the storm.
A weak, un-named tropical cyclone that at midweek had crossed the
island of Viti Levu, Fiji, is now dissipating over the southern
Pacific Ocean southeast of Fiji.
Sustained arctic winds of about 60 mph ripped Malyye Karmakuly,
Novaya Zemlya, Russia, Friday. At the time, temperatures slipped into
the lower single digits. Svalbard, Norway, on the opposite side of
the Barents Sea, weathered gales and 60-70 mph gusts Thursday into
Friday.
Nairobi, Kenya, Friday was pelted with rainfall of 4.7 inches.
Friday night, local time, the temperature dipped 94 degrees below
zero at the Russian outpost Vostok set high on the ice cap of East
Antarctica. The reading was the lowest here so far in this Southern
autumn.
On the shores of East Antarctica, meantime, a windstorm was
lashing Australia's Casey base Friday night, local time. With
temperatures in the lower 20s, sustained winds blew 45-70 mph for more
than six hours.
Unusually heavy spring rains pelted parts of southern Spain on
Friday. Hard against the Mediterranean Sea, the city of Almeria
collected 1.1 inches of rain within 12 hours, or about the same as
would fall here in an average April.
