Typhoon Sudal has built steadily, if slowly, in size and strength
over the western North Pacific Ocean this week. Early Thursday morning,
EDT, the heart of Sudal is 100 miles east-southeast of Yap in the western
Caroline Islands. Highest winds about the big storm have inched up to
120 mph as it makes its way to the west at nearly 10 mph. For Yap, the
worst of Sudal will come early Friday, local time, and will undoubtedly
see destructive, hurricane-strength winds. Well into the night, local
time, winds at the airport were already clocked in gusts at 45-55 mph
with rainfall of 2.6 inches. Once clear of Yap, Sudal is forecast to
swing northwards over the open Philippine Sea for at least a few days.
A weak, un-named tropical cyclone is near Fiji after having swept
across Viti Levu, the Fijian "big island". Early Thursday morning, EDT,
this storm is centered about 65 miles southeast of Nausori,
Fiji. With highest sustained winds of 40 mph, the cyclone is moving
towards the southeast at nearly 25 mph. Forecasts are for steady
southeasterly motion, but with little in the way of strengthening.
Bitter arctic winds blasted northeastern Greenland Wednesday
night and Thursday. At Danmark Havn, sustained winds of 55 to 65 mph
were clocked amidst single-digit temperatures. Gusty surely topped
hurricane strength, but were not recorded. Kroyers Holme saw winds of
50 to 55 mph at temperatures 5 to 10 degrees below zero.
In East Antarctica, the Vostok station atop the ice cap, an
overnight low of 91 degrees below zero was set early Thursday.
A cold front instigated locally soaking rains and strong cooling
in eastern China this midweek. In the southern province of Guangdong,
rainfall was 4.8 inches within 48 hours at Shaoguan and 3.9 inches
within 24 hours at Lianxian, with both measurements as of early Thursday
morning, local time. Northward, the passage of the cold front was good
for a 30-degree temperature drop in Shanghai and nearby cities. In
Shanghai, Tuesday's high was 81 degrees, but 24 hours later, readings
were near 50 degrees.
