Severe Weather Episode Taking Shape Over South Central U.S.; Same System
(With Associated Upper Air Disturbance) Threatens To Bring Widespread Heavy
Rainfall Across Much Of Dixie, Appalachia And East Coast
EXPECTED NORTH AMERICA SEVERE OR EXTREME WEATHER NEXT 24 HOURS:
SEVERE WEATHER OUTLOOK below for details.
Another aspect of the growing storm is the shield of heavy rainfall, already
taking shape over the central U.S. Today and tomorrow, the northern fringes of
the stratiform precipitation may mix with or occasionally change to wet snow
and sleet, but the important accumulations of the white stuff will be limited
to higher elevations of CO....WY....and the NE Panhandle. In the cold and
overrunning sectors of the developing cyclone, 1-3" of rainfall could occur,
involving much of the "Arklatex" vicinity and the lower Tennessee Valley into lower
Appalachia. A breakaway impulse should spread a quick hit of moderate rains
through the Piedmont and Atlantic Coastal Plain, reaching New England on Sunday
night.
Contrasting with the widespread colder air over the Great Plains and Midwest,
ridging along the Continental Divide should reestablish warm and dry
conditions over the western third of the nation by Day 3. I do not see the "false
summer" returning to the Rocky Mountains and High Plains until far into the medium
range, however. Another shortwave is forecast to drop into the mean 500MB
trough, bringing more cooling with some showers and thunder to NE....KS....OK on
April 11.
