Typhoon Sudal is a strengthening storm over the western North
Pacific Ocean. Late Tuesday afternoon, EDT, Sudal is 260 miles south
of Agana, Guam, packing highest sustained winds of 85 mph. Sudal is
headed towards the west at 9 mph. Sudal is forecast to head towards
the west-northwest for at least the next two days, thereby affording
Guam a wide berth to the south and southwest. Later, such western
Caroline Islands as Yap may hear from this potentially mighty storm.
In central Turkistan, generic name for an area sometimes called
"former Soviet Central Asia", this week began with unusual warmth for
so early in spring. The area of Turkistan spans a wide area from the
Caspian Sea eastward to Mongolia and Tibet, but the stretch in
question here is hard against the lofty Tian Shan, Pamir and
Zeravshan mountains. Take the Uzbekistan capital, Tashkent
(Toshkent): versus a mean daily high of 61 degrees, the city Monday
set a high of 91 degrees. But here's the shocker: a cold front sent
the temperature tumbling and mid-day, Tuesday, brought bursts of
heavy, wet snow at 33 degrees. Not far to the north in neighboring
Kazakhstan, the story was much the same at Shymkent: abnormal,
87-degree warmth Monday, then heavy snow at 32 degrees Tuesday
morning.
Soaking downpours struck parts of far northeastern India late
Monday to early Tuesday, local time. In Gauhati, heavy showers and
thunderstorms dropped 4.6 inches of rain within 15 hours.
It's been even hotter than usual lately in eastern Pakistan and
northern India. Tuesday saw widespread 100-degrees-and-higher heat in
these areas. Topping the list of hot spots was Nawabshah, Pakistan,
where 113 degrees was reached.
