Saturday, a strong tropical wave is near Chuuk and Losan of the
eastern Caroline Islands; it is a strong candidate for the next named
tropical storm for the western North Pacific Ocean. This feature
dumped well over 8 inches of rain on Chuuk on Friday into Saturday.
Soaking rains have pelted some islands of French Polynesia this
week. Saturday's output of less than 1.4 inches was comparably meager,
but it hiked week-long rainfall on the Takaroa Atoll to more than 18
inches.
Drought-prone northwestern Mexico has lately seen bountiful
rains. Altar, in the state of Sonora, picked up 2.5 inches of rain
within less than two days ended Friday evening. For all of April,
only about 0.15 of an inch of rain falls on average.
Friday morning into early Saturday, torrential rains befitting
early fall washed northwestern Patagonia. On the Chilean side,
rainfall was nearly four inches at Valdivia and Osorno. In neighboring
Argentina, rainfall was almost three inches at San Carlos de
Bariloche, also at Esquel, where 2.0 inches is the mean for all of
April.
Late Saturday, local time, an automated weather station at
Manuela, East Antarctica, clocked steady winds between 55 and 60 mph
at a temperature of 12 degrees below zero. Wind chill was 50 degrees
below zero.
