The week began with a harsh arctic blizzard in Nunavut, Canada,
near the northern shores of Hudson's Bay. Coral Harbour, on the island
of Southampton, was raked by high winds that churned up whiteouts
Sunday night through early Tuesday. At its worst, the storm dished out
winds of 55-65 mph at temperatures near zero degrees.
In western Canada, meanwhile, summery warmth was felt Tuesday
afternoon from the foothills of southern Alberta to southwestern
Saskatchewan. In Calgary, Alberta, 77 degrees was reached at
midafternoon whereas an average day at the end of March would have a
high in the lower 40s. It was even warmer in Drumheller, AB, where
temperatures were as high as 81 degrees. The provincial capital,
Edmonton, climbed to 75 degrees surpassing the daily mean high by more
than 35 degrees. Other warm spots included Lethbridge at 79 degrees and
Red Deer at 77. In Saskatchewan, the 80-degree mark was breached at
Leader and nearby Kindersley soared to 77; both of these readings were
warmer than average by more than 30 degrees.
At the Amundsen-Scott station, South Pole, Antarctica, the
temperature slipped below -80 degrees last Friday, and but for quick
foray to -79 late Sunday, has held below -80 ever since. Indeed, the
range in temperature has been between 79 and 88 degrees below zero --
coldest since the first week of last October. Meantime, highs near
-64 and lows near -74 would be more fitting for late March.
Although Southern Hemisphere fall has begun, heat befitting mid
summer has hung over much of the southern wedge of South America.
Take Buenos Aires, Argentina, where the seven days as of Monday were
an average of 10.1 degrees above the mean temperature for this
span of time. Three of these days saw 90-degree afternoons.
In French Polynesia, two-day rainfall as of Tuesday afternoon,
local time, was 8.3 inches at Rikitea, Gambier Islands.
Tijuana, Mexico, sweltered on Monday, but returned to its usual
moderate climate Tuesday. Under bright sunshine, Monday's temperature
was as high as 93 degrees in this oceanside city whereas an average
day at the end of March would have a high near 70. With sunshine
again, but also a steady onshore breeze, Tuesday's afternoon
temperatures hovered in the lower 70s.
