[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Wednesday, Jan 21

January 21, 2004 7:05 p.m.

Northwestern Australia Wednesday withered under fiery heat. Near
the shore in the state of Western Australia, Dampier topped out 116
degrees. Nearby, Roebourne was about as hot, and Mardie reached 114.

Whereas the first two-thirds of January saw anomalous warmth over
East Asia, and especially Korea, Wednesday brought the first
thoroughgoing arctic blast of the winter thus far. The South Korean
capital, Seoul, Wednesday afternoon could muster no better than 10
degrees at a wind chill of 5 to 10 degrees below zero. The morning low
was 4 degrees -- their coldest thus far -- and Wednesday night was
set to dip even lower. Far-northern Korea, in the North near the
China border, Samjiyon set a low of 31 degrees below zero, and
rebound Wednesday afternoon was only to -11.

Bitter cold lately has set upon the high inter-mountain basins of
eastern Turkey. The city of Erzurum, for example, Tuesday and
Wednesday set two-straight lows of 19 degrees below zero. This
followed earlier, consecutive lows of minus-9 degrees on Sunday and
Monday. The average daily low at this time of the year is about 6
degrees. Daytimes have been cold, too. Highs were 8, 3 and 2 degrees,
respectively, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday whereas the mean daily high
is in the middle 20s. But, to show the diversity of weather and
climate experienced across Turkey, witness Inebolu along the Black
Sea. Here, a little over 400 miles northwest of Erzurum, Tuesday's
high was a spring-like 65 degrees, and the low, 55 -- 74 degrees above
Erzurum's low!

Russia's arctic Wrangel (Vrangelya) Island, northwest of Alaska,
Tuesday and Wednesday weathered biting gales. As temperatures hovered
near 5 degrees below zero, wind blew steadily at between 40 and 50
mph.

Wednesday, arctic air advancing southward over Canada's prairies
contrasted markedly with unseasonable warmth being registered along
the foothills of the nation's southern Rocky Mountains. In Calgary,
Alberta, where most of January has been much milder than average, 41
degrees was reached at midafternoon Wednesday whereas the daily mean
high was 23. At the same time, Winnipeg, Manitoba, about 740 miles
away, hovered near minus-15 degrees, or 20-25 degrees below average.
Since January 8th, the average temperature in Calgary has been more
than 20 degrees above "normal".

Recent days have seen unusually heavy rains in parts of New
Zealand. On the southern tip of North Island, Wellington was doused by
4.0 inches of rain from Sunday to early Thursday morning, local time.
This capital city receives, on average, about 2.9 inches of rain
during all of January.
