Stormy and wet is how western Europe has begun the week. Gales
have swept across the shores of France with high winds penetrating
inland to the Alps and southern Germany. In the Schwarzwald of
southwestern Germany, the top of the mountain, the Feldberg, Tuesday
was whipped by winds of 50 to 60 mph. Much of this area has been
soaked with anywhere between one-half and two inches of rain. Another
high spot in Germany, Grosser Falkenstein, had snow and a little rain
equivalent to 2.5 inches, or enough for more than two feet of
snowfall.
There last two to three days have seen tropical downpours pelt
eastern Brasil northeast of Rio de Janeiro. Aimores and Itaperuna
each picked up 6.1 inches of rain.
Tuesday was the fourth-straight day having a low of 56 degrees
below zero at Shepherd Bay, Nunavut, Canada. Daily highs, meantime,
were 40 or more degrees below zero.
A strong winter storm Tuesday began lashing northern Japan with
high winds and heavy snows. Tuesday evening, winds off the Sea of
Japan gusted between 55 and 60 mph at Niigata.
It's been a remarkably rainy stretch for southwestern Iran. The
rainy stretch began early last week and has, as of Tuesday, left
areas of the southern Zagros Mountains with roughly a whole year's
average rainfall. Since Friday alone, rain and wet snow have been
equivalent to 9.1 inches at Yasuj. Rainfall at Gach Saran has been
7.7 inches.
Soaking rains have struck parts of northernmost Australia in
recent days. In Darwin, Northern Territory, rainfall was about 4.6
inches within 30 hours to Tuesday afternoon, local time. Nearby
Bathurst Island was drenched by 5.9 inches of rain within 72 hours as
of Tuesday morning.
Rainfall has been heavy on the some of the South Pacific's
Marquesas Islands lately. On the island of Hiva Oa, rainfall was at
least 6.3 inches within 45 hours at Atuona as of midday Tuesday.
