January 11, 2004 4:36 p.m.

Local, torrential rains pelted southern Iran at week's end. At
Gach Saran, tucked in the southern Zagros Mountains, rainfall was 6.3
inches within about 24 hours. Higher up, soaking rains shifted to
heavy snows at Yasuj, where water equivalent from the latest outburst
was 6.4 inches, much of it as wet snow. Both sites had been washed
with several inches of rain earlier in the week.

Patagonia, the southern "wedge" of South America, is notorious
for its high winds which blast seemingly unending from the
rain-sodden Pacific side to the dry and dusting Atlantic shore.
Witness Saturday, when gusts at Rio Gallegos, Argentina, topped 65
mph. Gusted of 55 to 60 mph were clocked at Comodoro Rivadavia and
Rio Grande, Argentina, and at Punta Arenas, Chile. The rain-soaked
Evangelista Islands of Chile observed 50-mph steady winds and
rainfall of more than two inches.

Hot desert winds Sunday drove 100-degree heat into western
Australia's main city of Perth. Before daybreak, easterly winds gusted
to 40 mph thereby paving the way for temperatures of at least 105
degrees in the city, and nearly 110 degrees nearby.

A report of 22.1 inches of rain within 24 hours, and 25.3 over two
days, early Saturday flowed from Trinidad, Bolivia. Wet summers are to
be expected in Bolivia's lowlands, but this was more than two-fold the
mean monthly rainfall.

Athens, Greece, early Sunday picked up 2.3 inches of rain. This
accounted for nearly all of the mean monthly rainfall of 2.44 inches.

Sunday, biting arctic this weekend winds blasted Wrangell Island,
Russia. Winds blew 35-45 mph at temperatures to 5 degrees below zero.
This drove wind chill into the -30s.

Bitter cold kept a grip on Turkey late in the week. Morning lows
Saturday were 7 degrees below zero at Ankara and Erzurum and 5 below
at Kars and Corum; Sunday started 9 below at Kars. Friday morning had
been even colder, with Erzurum setting a low of 15 below. The normal
low temperature in Ankara is 25 degrees. The cold weather has been
blamed for at least 10 deaths and many towns have been isolated by
heavy snowfall. At the same time, heavy rains pelted Mediterranean
shores in the southwest: within about 24 hours, rainfall was 6.4
inches at Finike.
