[STORMREPORTS] Arctic Sea Smoke

From: CUMULONIMBUS329{at}aol.com
Date: Sun Jan 11 2004 - 00:00:46 EST

This morning here in the Bronx, New York City about a half hour before
sunrise I noticed Arctic sea smoke over Eastchester Bay. This phenomenon also
covered the waters north of the mouth of the East River. Some of the smoke was
coming onshore, so I investigated. Water temperatures were about 40 degrees
while the ambient air temperature was near zero. I also noticed that some of the
smoke formed vortices proving the violent heat exchange. Interestingly,
downwind of the Arctic sea smoke some cumulus had formed; undoubtedly, the release
of the sensible heat and moisture had destabilized that portion of the
atmosphere. (I had not noticed the formation of the cumulus a couple of years ago
when this Arctic sea smoke was last observed.) Also, over northern Nassau
County, Long Island some cumulus were noted- so, I assume that there was also this
same phenomenon occuring over western Long Island Sound. This same
thermodynamic process was also evident over Cape Cod this morning: at 6 a.m. Hyannis and
Nantucket were considerably warmer than surrounding stations and they both
reported cloudy skies with snow.
