At least one Canadian record fell Saturday in the clutches of the
arctic cold snap gripping eastern North America. London, Ontario,
dipped at least 13 degrees below zero besting the standing record low
of 10 below. This followed Friday's tie of a record low: it was -6
degrees. Much of eastern Canada between the Great Lakes and the Gulf
of Saint Lawrence early Saturday read 10 to 30 degrees below zero.
One spot in Ontario, Borden, less than 50 miles from the Toronto
lakefront, at daybreak had 31 degrees below zero.
Torrential rains that began at midweek lingering into Saturday
over a swatch of southern Iran. After three days of rain, rainfall
rose to 7.1 inches at Fasa, and 5.8 inches at Shiraz.
A report of 22.1 inches of rain within 24 hours, and 25.3 over two
days, early Saturday flowed from Trinidad, Bolivia. Wet summers are to
be expected in Bolivia's lowlands, but this was more than two-fold the
mean monthly rainfall.
Emerald, Queensland, Australia, was soaked by 3.9 inches of rain
within 18 hours as of early Saturday, local time. This rainfall
nearly equaled the January average which is 4.1 inches.
Thunderstorms drenched Bukoba, Tanzania with four and a third
inches of rain on Saturday.
Bitterly cold air kept a grip on Turkey Saturday. Morning lows
were 7 below at Ankara and Erzurum and 5 below at Kars and Corum.
Friday morning had been even colder, with Erzurum setting a low of 15
below. The normal low temperature in Ankara is 25 degrees. The cold
weather has been blamed for at least 10 deaths and many towns have
been isolated by heavy snowfall.
