QUOTES:
"Pupils at a Cornwall preparatory school returned to classes this week to
find their school had been hit by lightning in a storm on Boxing Day,
leaving it without electricity, telephone lines or fire alarms.
"There were two particularly loud claps of thunder, followed by lightning.
One bolt obviously hit the school," said Mr Lovett.
"It seems to have struck in two places and took out nearly all of our
delicate electrical circuits."
The lightning struck a tree in the school grounds, which carried the
electricity down into the ground. An underground electric cable picked up
the charge, carrying it into the swimming pool changing rooms where it
surfaced through the concrete floor in a powerful jet.
Mr Lovett said: "All we were left with was a small crater in the floor and
debris scattered all over. There were charred black concrete blocks the
size of a fist everywhere, embedded in the walls and ceiling."
